GREENVILLE — Sen. Michele Brooks (R-50) announced the Mercer County Historical Society was awarded a $9,500 state grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to support their mission to preserve local history for residents and visitors.
“We have such a rich history here in Mercer County and a long list of historical sites that tell its story,” Brooks said. “This funding is an investment in preserving that history so our younger generations will learn why it is so important to appreciate our heritage and pass their stories along to the generations to come.”
The Mercer County Historical Society and Museum was founded in 1946 and incorporated in 1947. It promotes educational opportunities connected to Mercer County’s history through its museum, library and archives, living history programs, oral history project, publications programs, and historic sites and buildings.
The society offers free admission year-round. A dedicated group of volunteers oversees tours, catalogs artifacts and manages the museum displays. Member donations provide much of the society’s support with grants helping cover remaining expenses.
Funding was awarded though the Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program, which provides general operating support to eligible Pennsylvania museums and official county historical societies.
