Brooks Announces More Than $1 Million for Transportation Project in Mercer County

Transportation Improvement Grants

HARRISBURG — Sen. Michele Brooks (R-50) announced today the City of Hermitage has been awarded $1.14 million for a key infrastructure project in the Hermitage Industrial Area.

“This is a vital investment for Hermitage’s infrastructure and the businesses providing family-sustaining jobs that depend on it,” Brooks said. “These improvements will help ensure local roads can safely and reliably support the businesses that drive our local economy, while also helping the city address significant infrastructure needs.”

The project will rehabilitate three local roads in the Hermitage Industrial Area that serve 11 businesses and accommodate more than 200 daily truck trips. Together, those businesses support nearly 1,000 family-sustaining jobs.

Constructed in the 1980s, the three roadways have reached a point where significant rehabilitation is needed to safely and efficiently accommodate the daily heavy commercial traffic.

The project is especially important following the 2024 merger of the Borough of Wheatland into the City of Hermitage. Through the merger, Hermitage assumed responsibility for Wheatland’s local roadways, sewer and stormwater infrastructure. Wheatland had faced limited resources to make the infrastructure investments necessary to maintain its community. Since the merger, Hermitage has worked to address those longstanding infrastructure needs. The additional responsibilities have placed increased demands on the city’s resources, making state support important to advancing projects such as the rehabilitation of the industrial area roadways.

Planned improvements include base repairs; installation of Superpave asphalt binder and wearing courses; asphalt planing; driveway replacements; manhole adjustments to grade; and shoulder restoration, including topsoil, mulch and seed.

The grant was awarded by PennDOT through its Multimodal Transportation Fund, which supports projects that improve transportation infrastructure and help ensure a safe and reliable transportation system for Pennsylvania residents.
