HARRISBURG –– Sen. Michele Brooks (R-50) today announced the awarding of $353,547 in low-interest loan funding to Vernon Central Hose Company for a new heavy-duty rescue/pumper through the Fire & Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Loan Assistance Program.

“Firefighters put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities,” said Brooks. “It is critical that they have the equipment and resources needed to do their jobs safely and effectively. I am happy to have helped secure this funding for a new rescue engine that will support these brave men and women and make our communities safer.”

The company’s current rescue truck serves a single function and does not have fire suppression capabilities beyond portable fire extinguishers. When the truck was originally purchased, staffing levels allowed a separate engine crew to respond alongside the rescue truck to provide fire suppression if needed.

The new Vernon Central Hose Company vehicle will provide enhanced capabilities for motor vehicle accidents and other rescue incidents while also carrying water, a pump and hose lines for on-scene fire suppression. The rescue engine will be fully capable of responding to structure fires and other fire-related emergencies outside of rescue operations.

“This loan is not only a lifesaver for this vital purchase, but will save lives for years to come, and I am grateful to the Office of State Fire Commissioner for approving these funds,” said Brooks.

The Fire & Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Loan Assistance Program offers a fixed 2% interest rate to fire and EMS companies for the acquisition, rehabilitation or improvement of apparatus, facilities and equipment. The program is open year-round to any career or volunteer fire company or EMS agency in Pennsylvania.
