Brooks, Longietti: $40,000 to fund Sharpsville playground improvements

HERMITAGE, Nov. 14 – Area families will enjoy greater access to a newly renovated playground, thanks to a $40,000 grant, state Rep. Mark Longietti, D-Mercer, and state Sen. Michele Brooks, R-Crawford/Mercer/Erie/Warren, announced today.

The grant awarded by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will fund renovations to the 13th Street Playground located adjacent to the Sharpsville – South Pymatuning Little League complex.

“The park’s location next to the Little League complex makes it a natural gathering place for families with children of different ages,” Longietti said.

“The improvements planned – replacing outdated playground equipment; substituting mulch for gravel; improving sidewalk and ADA accessibility; and installing picnic tables, benches, a shelter and T-ball facilities – will give parents and caregivers a better place to socialize and spend time with their younger children, who will enjoy updated and expanded play options while their older siblings use the ball field,” he added.

Brooks agreed, saying, “I appreciated the opportunity to work with the Sharpsville community and Rep. Longietti on the makeover of a family gathering place that has been the scene of many happy memories for decades. With new picnic tables, sidewalks, and playground equipment, along with safer, softer ground covering, the playground will be more engaging and accessible to people of all ages and abilities. We are honored to partner with so many Sharpsville leaders and neighbors to help fulfill this vision.”

Borough manager Ken Robertson added, “Borough Council is grateful to DCNR for this investment in our community’s recreational facilities and appreciates the efforts of Senator Brooks and Representative Longietti on behalf of the families that will benefit from these long-needed improvements.”

The grant is administered by DCNR through the Community Conservation Partnerships Program.

The program funds projects such as planning, acquisition and development of public parks and recreation areas, motorized and non-motorized trails, river conservation and access and conservation of open space.
