New Ten-Year Health Care Agreement Is Welcome News, Brooks Says

HARRISBURG (June 24, 2019) Sen. Michele Brooks greeted today’s news of a just-reached 10-year contract between UPMC and Highmark with happiness and appreciation.

“I commend all those involved in these successful negotiations and greet this new day for health care in Western Pennsylvania with enthusiasm and optimism,” Brooks said.

“This decision gives peace of mind to the many families, doctors and staff who were struggling to navigate through this process, which would have created further disruption and chaos for health care in our communities,” she added.

“I’m thankful that families will now have the opportunity to continue to receive treatment from the doctor and health care provider of their choice,” Brooks said.

While the contract terms and conditions between Highmark and UPMC will be finalized throughout the next few weeks, beginning July 1, all Highmark members will have full in-network access to UPMC if their health plan includes UPMC in their health care provider network.

Scott Baker, Vice-President and Chief Government Relations Officer for UPMC said, “Senator Brooks led the way to gaining access to UPMC Horizon hospitals and providers last year and has been in constant communication since regarding access to the UPMC Hillman Caner Center and the broader UPMC provider system.”
